QTP – Known Hotfixes for Odd QuickTest Pro issues

Automation Guild Online Conference Top ad

This annoys me

The annoying thing about hotfixes is that, unlike patches, you rarely know about them until after you've contacted HP support with an issue. I hate banging my head against the wall trying to resolve odd QTP behavior only to find out that it is a known issue.

For hotfixes you need to contact HP — not me:

These are the hotfixes that I'm aware of. If you know of more, please let us know by leaving a comment below.

Note: Hotfixes are not publicly available, so you'll need to open a ticket with HP using their case manager .

List of hotfixes that I know of

Below is a list of known issues I've compiled from 2011 that have been reported to HP, along with some possible hotfix resolutions that may be available. I'm posting this list to help preserve your sanity if you're seeing any similarly odd behavior.

Iteration Issue

Iteration settings are ignored running test from ALM11

When a test is launched via the test lab in ALM/Quality Center 11, the DataTable iteration setting in the test settings is ignored. The test selects automatically the value “Run on all rows” instead of the value “Run one iteration only”. The same issue is not reproducible in QuickTest Professional 10 with Quality Center 10.

To solve the issue, please open a ticket with the Functional Testing support and ask for the following hotfixes:

  • – QTP_00733 – Run Specific Iteration Range from Test Set and Display Iterations Correctly
  • – QTP_00809 – Ensure Keyword View Layout Settings Are Restored After Running a Test Set from HP ALM/QC

Crazy File System growth in ALM11

QTP eCATT error

If you receive the following error “Cannot save the eCATT test. Confirm that the test name you specified matches the SAP eCATT naming convention”

In eCATT you can define a so known “Naming Convention”, which test and file names have to follow in order to be successfully saved in eCATT. Even if no known Naming Convention has been set, there is a built-in  rule defined. If this error comes up, please add the z character in front of the test name like so:

Normal QuickTest Professional test:

eCattTest1

eCATT QuickTest Professional test:

zeCattTestt1

If a convention to name tests and/or files is defined on the Server, please adjust this accordingly.

For QuickTest Professional 11, please also request and install the following hotfixes as successfully saving the test might cause a crash of QuickTest Professional:

  • QTPSAP_00012 – Add Support for SAP CRM 7
  • QTPSAP_00013 – Improve Integration Support Between QuickTest Professional and SAP Solution Manager with SM-TSTR Interface (prerequisite for the next hotfix)

Hello Joe,

I work to HP and we are stuck with that Catastrophic Failure problem. We already try many things and HP Support unfortunately is not helping to much…
We are using QC 11 and QTP 11. That Patch QTP_00826 you mentioned in this article is for QTP 11?
Thanks a lot!

Giovanni » HI Giovanni – good question I assume it is for QTP 11. This is the exact info from HP:

    Customer symptom

Intermittent Catostrophic Errors occur when running long running BPT tests from Quality Center

    Customer resolution

The hotfix provided ensures QuickTest tests that are run from Quality Center do not fail when a single step takes a long time (for example, a step that instructs the tested application to generate a large file).
Prior to this hotfix, if a step took a long time, Quality center received a ‘catastrophic failure error’ and the test was marked as ‘Failed’ even though QuickTest continued to run the test after the long step was finished.

In order to enable this hotfix, you must set the flag HandleLongTrans=1 under [RemoteAgent] in the mic.ini file.
This hotfix also incorporates the fix from QTP_00614.

    Patch

QTP_00826 – Prevent Failure of QuickTest Tests Run from Quality Center
When a Single Step Takes a Long Time

    Hope this helps. Cheers~Joe

Hi Joe,
QTP_00826 – Prevent Failure of QuickTest Tests Run from Quality Center When a Single Step Takes a Long Time.
Do you have this patch on hand? I’ve sought to fix this issue for a long time. But unfortunately, I can not logon HP site to get it.
If you have this patch, can you send it to me?

Thanks very much!

Fal

I found this Hotfix was for QTP9.5 when I installed it. But I’m using QTP11. If there is the same hotfix for QTP11?

          Thanks

Fal » Hi Fal for this issue the only patch is for QTP 9.5. If you are using QTP 11 do you have the latest critical patch installed QTP_00709? If you have the latest critical patch installed and still are getting this error you should contact HP SUPPORT.

thanks Joe, but the support team is a little mess here. I have QTP 11, but the issue still exists. When I try to do any action on the Flex Data grid, the QTP crashes. I have the QTP swc file built into my app path. Looking for alternatives.

QTP and XenApp :

As far as I understood it, QTP 10 doesn’t support XenAPP (5.5 version). This is also documented in the PAM. Below is the link :

https://h10078.www1.hp.com/bto/…/QTP-PAM10-20090407.pdf

I faced a problem with QTP 10 not launching at all in the server with XenApp 5.5. Can you please let me know if you are facing a similar issue ?

      Thanks Joe for replying.

Can you please guide on one another thing –

When I associate DataTable which is stored in QC Test Resources with the Test in Test Plan by selecting the Data Source dropdown (in the Test Configuration Details dialog) and then associating each of the Test Parameter Name with the Resource Parameter Name (in the Data Resource Settings dialog); the test iterates for all the DataTable rows – which I dont want as I am controlling the datatable rows execution explicilty using the FOR loop ( i= 1 to DataTable.GlobalSheet.GetRowCount); thus, if there are 4 rows, my tests gets executed 4*4=16 times.

[During execution, I checked File Settings -> Run, DataTable Iterations got automatically selected to “Run on all rows”; however, before running the test I confirmed that it was selected to “Run one iteration only”.]

NOTE: I even observed this multiple times test execution earlier, WHEN either the Default.xls Data Table (design-time) OR when the DataTable in QC Test Resources is imported in the script at run time and the test was executed via the QC. to Fix this I installed QTP_00733 (Runs Specific Iteration Range from Test Set and Display Iterations Correctly) by referring to one of your earlier post.

      Thanks,

Hi Joe,

I have issues when trying to recognise a single cell in an OracleTable, ObjectSpy just identifies the table and not the individual cells.
I am using QTP11, Oracle 12.0.6 and 12.1.3 and Jave 6.7.
I have applied patches QTP 00733, QTP 00709, QTPORACLE 00010 and QTPWEB 00078.
The Java and Oracle add-ins are also being used.
All help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Joe,

I am running QTP scripts from ALM 11 Quality Center. I am having an issue with running speed of the automated scripts. The scripts automatically runs in fast mode even if I pause the scripts and make it normal from option menu. Is there a way to conrtol the speed while running from QC? Please let me know if you have a solution.

Thanks!
